How Much Does a Semi Truck Weigh? Day Cab, Sleeper and Legal Limits

Sep 30
4 min read

Quick answer: An empty semi tractor, called a bobtail, typically weighs about 15,000 to 22,000 pounds. For a Freightliner Cascadia that's roughly 15,000–18,000 pounds as a day cab and 17,000–22,000 pounds as a sleeper. Hook up an empty 53-foot dry van, about 13,000 pounds, and you're around 28,000–35,000 pounds before any cargo. Fully loaded, a rig is limited to 80,000 pounds gross on the Interstate system.

Semi Truck Weight at a Glance

What you're weighing

Typical weight

Day cab tractor, empty (Cascadia)

15,000–18,000 lbs

Mid-roof sleeper tractor, empty (Cascadia)

17,000–20,000 lbs

Raised-roof sleeper tractor, empty (Cascadia)

18,000–22,000 lbs

Empty 53-foot dry van trailer

About 13,000 lbs

Federal gross vehicle weight limit (Interstate)

80,000 lbs

Federal single axle limit (Interstate)

20,000 lbs

Federal tandem axle limit (Interstate)

34,000 lbs

Federal limits are from the Federal Highway Administration. Tractor ranges are typical figures for the Freightliner Cascadia. Every truck is different, so use the real number for the truck you're buying.

The Weight Terms That Matter

  • Bobtail weight: the tractor alone, with no trailer attached.

  • Tare (unladen) weight: the truck with no cargo, but with fuel and standard equipment. This is the "empty weight" most buyers mean.

  • GVWR: gross vehicle weight rating, the most the truck itself is rated to carry, including its own weight. Cascadia tractors typically run 52,000–62,000 pounds depending on spec.

  • Gross vehicle weight: what the whole rig actually weighs on the scale: tractor, trailer, fuel, driver and cargo.

  • Payload: what's left for cargo once you subtract the tractor and trailer from the legal limit.

Day Cab vs Sleeper Weight

A day cab is the lightest way to spec a tractor because there's no sleeper compartment behind the seats. A sleeper adds the bunk, storage and the larger cab structure. On a Freightliner Cascadia, that typically means 15,000–18,000 pounds for a day cab, 17,000–20,000 pounds for a mid-roof sleeper, and 18,000–22,000 pounds for a raised-roof sleeper.

What Changes a Semi's Weight

  • Engine: a Detroit DD15 is heavier than a DD13, by roughly 500–800 pounds depending on configuration.

  • Sleeper size: a 72-inch raised roof weighs more than a 48-inch mid-roof.

  • Fuel: diesel is roughly 7 pounds per gallon, so 200 gallons adds about 1,400 pounds.

  • Axles and add-ons: heavier-rated axles, APUs, fairings and other equipment all add up.

  • Hood length: a longer BBC, like a Cascadia 126 versus a 116, usually adds a few hundred pounds.

Federal Weight Limits

According to the FHWA, federal standards on the Interstate Highway System are 80,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, 20,000 pounds on a single axle and 34,000 pounds on a tandem axle. The federal bridge formula, introduced in 1975, also ties how much weight you can carry to how many axles you have and how far apart they are. States set their own rules on other roads, and some have grandfathered limits, so check the states you run.

How to Work Out Your Payload

Start with the 80,000-pound limit and subtract the tractor and trailer:

  • Sleeper tractor at 20,000 lbs + 53-foot dry van at 13,000 lbs = 33,000 lbs empty. That leaves about 47,000 lbs for cargo.

  • Day cab at 17,500 lbs + the same trailer = 30,500 lbs empty. That leaves about 49,500 lbs for cargo.

That 2,500-pound difference can decide whether a load fits, which is why weight belongs on your checklist before you buy.

How to Get the Real Number for a Truck

  • Ask for a scale ticket on the specific truck, with fuel.

  • Read the door sticker for GVWR and axle ratings.

  • Get the spec sheet so you know the engine, sleeper, axles and tanks you're paying for.

Semi Truck Weight: Common Questions

How much does a semi truck weigh empty?

A semi tractor with no trailer, called a bobtail, typically weighs about 15,000 to 22,000 pounds. For a Freightliner Cascadia, a day cab typically runs 15,000–18,000 pounds and a sleeper 17,000–22,000 pounds, depending on spec.

How much does a day cab semi weigh?

A Freightliner Cascadia day cab typically weighs 15,000–18,000 pounds empty. Day cabs are lighter because they don't carry a sleeper compartment.

How much does a sleeper cab semi weigh?

A Freightliner Cascadia sleeper typically weighs 17,000–20,000 pounds with a mid-roof sleeper and 18,000–22,000 pounds with a raised-roof sleeper.

How much can a fully loaded semi weigh?

On the Interstate Highway System, federal limits are 80,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, 20,000 pounds on a single axle and 34,000 pounds on a tandem axle. Some states allow different limits on their own roads or with permits.

How much does a 53-foot dry van trailer weigh?

A standard 53-foot dry van trailer is typically around 13,000 pounds empty. Reefers, flatbeds and other trailers vary, so check the trailer's own numbers.

How much weight does diesel fuel add?

Diesel weighs roughly 7 pounds per gallon, so 200 gallons of fuel adds about 1,400 pounds.
